- Development of early filter was in 20th century for telephony applications.
- Major progress was in 1930-1940 but was limited to filter made of lossless elements such as inductors, capacitors and mutual inductors
- After 1940, development of active filters where transition was to solid state devices
- After 1960, development of Digital signal processing introduced digital filter to simulate analog filters
